Description of Listing

Deoghar, literally meaning “the abode of the gods”, can arguably be called the spiritual center of the state of Jharkhand. It is also known as Baba Dham, enshrines a scared Jyotirlinga. Considered to be one of the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva. Baidyanath Dham is also one of the Puranic tirthas consider to be as holy as Haridwar, Rameshwaram and Badrinath. Baidyanath Dham drive its name from the belief that Shiva presides here as a Baidya or a Physician. As written in Shiva Purana, Ravana was a great devotee of Shiva and wanted the Lord to visit his Home in Lanka. Shiva gave him a Linga to establish in his country, assuring him that the presence of his Linga would to be equal to having him there. The only condition was that he could only put it on the ground. Once he reached his destination and not before that, or else the linga would take root wherever it was placed. All the other gods felt very uncomfortable with the thought of Ravana carrying away something which possessed so much power, and devised a ruse to distract him. It is said that the god of water interred Ravana body and he had to descend on earth to relieve himself. Vishnu then, disguised as a Brahim, offered to hold the linga for him in the mean while. However, as soon as he was handed the linga, he put it on the ground. When Ravana returned he found the Brahim missing and the Linga formally rooted in the ground. Despite his best effort, it could not be uprooted. This is where the present temple was built, to house the revered Jyotirlinga.
